Social Justice through a Caring Science Lens

with Debby Flickinger Ph.D.

In a world that is constantly changing, we find ourselves immersed in conversations about social justice. What would happen if the discussions about race, ethnic background, LQBTQIA+, gender-identity, and immigration were approached through a lens of caring and compassion? Moreover, what if the global dialog fostered a caring and compassionate approach towards diversity and inclusion?

This course invites students to participate in a dialog around issues of social justice through the lens of Caring Science Theory. Students will engage in a meaningful conversation about six areas of social justice, specifically, #MeToo, race, ethnicity, LGBTQIA+ and gender identity, Immigration at the United States Southern Border, and the arrival of both Gen-X’ers and millennials in government. The readings and videos provide an up-to-date look of today’s challenges. Students will be encouraged to look critically at their own biases and to foster caring and compassionate approaches towards diversity and inclusion.

Dr. Jean Watson’s (2008) Caring Science Theory and Caritas Processes™ were designed to teach nurses an alternative approach to care for their patients. During her dissertation process, Dr. Debby Flickinger (2018) connected both with her work and developed Caring Sustainability™. She has since applied Caring Sustainability™ to the area of social justice and diversity inclusion. Students in this course will be required to look at social justice issues through the lens Caring Science Theory and the Caritas Processes™.
